The Handmaid’s Tale

margaret_atwood_the_handmaids_taleWhen I picked up this novel, I wasn’t expecting the sinking feeling I’d get for weeks as I tried to finish it.

Thoroughly engrossing, it made me bleed emotionally. Keeping the pages turning became a tough task not because the book was a boring or cumbersome read, but because the story made me feel so heavy, like reading many of Orwell’s books (Animal Farm and 1984 in particular) makes me feel. In any case it stirred the feminist parts of me, wrung the parts of me that fear powerful religion, and left me laying in my bed wondering how to make sure this kind of stuff doesn’t happen. Parallels with the holocaust, internment, and our current world’s religious tyrannical oligarchies made it feel that much more real.

Excellent read, and probably one of the best books I’ve ever read.

I’ve gotten the idea into my head that I want a physical library of all the books that really made an impact on me. While searching for a good quality hardback, I came across these great illustrations by Ana and Elena Balbusso.
