Roswell is a great place to find old odds and ends, especially in the historic district. It’s haul from my house (1 hr +) but I’m over there all the time since my parents live there. This weekend I found myself trawling the antique store scene. I walked out with more loot than usual and once piece I’m especially excited about.
But first, this little container. I love oriental themed items that are or look handmade. This was a Taiwanese piece from 1982 but is probably not handmade. I do love the way it looks though.
On to specimen number two. Hand-painted Japanese bowls. They’re the perfect crimson to go with my red leather barstools and splashes of red throughout my living room. I’ve just got to figure out how to adhere them to my wall since they’re not actually wall art. Each one is unique though.
And, finally the purchase I really was thrilled about, a 1913 Eastman Kodak 1A Jr. There was a whole shelf of cameras ranging from a few bucks to a couple thousand dollars but this one was among the two that really caught my eye (the other being an Agfa Ansco PD-16)
All the dials and manual bits are in good condition. Of course, it’s not mint but it’s definitely got some charm. At first I thought it was a hundred years old, but it’s only 97.
I spent an hour twiddling with the shutter and manual aperture and manual f-stops! My next step is to buy some 120 film and actually take this for a spin. Of course, I have no idea where I can get someone to develop 120 film but Eh.
See that nice nameplate? It’s actually a door and that bottom long utensil is actually a film-marking stylus. Once you took your photo you could open that brass door, and write on the film. Maybe a date, or an event, or something before you rolled it. I thought that was genius.
Funny thing is, when I took it to show my dad, he goes into his closet and pulls out a Model No. 1 ! Apparently he’d been keeping it since his grandfather gave it to him. My dad’s is in pristine condition.
All of the items in this post were purchased at Eclectic Finds in Roswell. They sell antiques and all sorts of thingamabobs.
Maybe my next post will be about all the garage sales I’ll be trawling this summer and what treasures I might find there.
One day I hope to come across one of these, when it won’t blow a reasonable sized hole in my bank account: A Rollei Rolleiflex 2.8FX!
