Other Side

It utterly blows my mind that I went to the other side of the world, to a country so rich with images of people in the raw, and got so sick that my DSLR SD card had a total of 45 images on it. 28 of them were of a derelict old building with crows on top.

This is one of the few pictures I was in the mood to take, staring down at the scattered petals on the marble floor after Sunil’s wedding.

I don’t think I’ve ever been that ill in my life.

You know what else has killed my desire to take photos lately? Wedding planning. I’ll come out and say it, I hate wedding planning.  It all just seems so excessive to me.  The inability to not have something done well if I’m going to do it weighs heavily on me to. It’s been expressed repeatedly that this is a social responsibility and is more about family and other expectations than it really is about us. I accept. You don’t choose the culture you’re born into but I’m tired of it all already.

I’ve come to terms with this huge life-suck that is a wedding but it automatically tires me.  Man, I almost just want to go back to work the following Monday and go on a proper trip somewhere later in the year than waste my vacation days doing something half-assed just because it’s the week after the wedding.

Bah humbug.

Oh girl, I know you have an Indian family to please, so it’s different, but I HATED wedding planning too! UGH. My mom and I fought so much; it was stressful, and then a month before the wedding, the band cancelled and I also had to find someone else to bake our cake. No matter how much you plan, things go wrong. It rained on our wedding day, and our indoor/outdoor reception became all indoors.

But trust me, you will NEED and LOVE that honeymoon. I loved our wedding day despite whatever went differently than I had planned. I loved marrying my husband and a reception that was basically a huge dance party with yummy food and wine. But the honeymoon was bliss. You’re finally done with the wedding and escaping to a week of relaxing at the beach. We went to Sandals and loved having all the food and drinks we wanted at no additional cost. Lying on the beach with a drink in my hand, doing fun excursions, and just hanging out with my best friend- it was JUST what I needed after all that stressful wedding stuff was done. Don’t discount it! ;)

I hear ya. I’ve been hiring companies that have backups for their backups and going with the services and vendors suggested by by the Marriott Grand Marquis whenever I can knowing they have a bajillion staff at hand and guarantees too. I want to be -done- with my wedding planning by the end of July and then forget about it until the actual wedding weekend. I haven’t gone with a single person yet. I’m probably even booking my DJ with a company of like 20 DJ’s with backups. I’m about as backup-paranoid with this as I am with my hard drives.

Between working full time, shooting people’s events, listening to my mom call me self-centered every time I even mention that a 400 person wedding is getting kinda expensive, I am always like 5 minutes from buying a plane ticket to Seattle or something for a week by myself. Yesterday a decorator laughed (politely) at my budget for decor. And it wasn’t even small (or so I thought). I swear if I wasn’t out at boot camp getting my energy completely drained, I would have turned into a puddle of fail by now.

I think Jeremy and I are considering one of those 2 week cruises. Endless food, drink, casino, dancing, shows, formal dinners, and excursions on a new island every couple days to explore and NONE of it having to be planned!

I noticed that most of the awesome cruises leave only the first week of October and not the last weekend of September but it may be worth the wait. :) I’m will to wait a week to snag a better 14 day cruise! Like NO cruises start on September 30th or October 1st! :/ I am willing to kick this tradition to the curb to get away to somewhere better a week later! We’ll see. :)
